The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
